Last week I attended a conference for 401(k) specialists in Salt Lake City and while there were many interesting topics -- for 401(k) nerds like myself -- I also learned about a project that is trying to help kids be better with money.
Since it's back-to-school season again, I thought that this would be a good time to share the resources with you so that you can help a young person (from middle to high school) in your life better understand things like budgeting, investing, asset allocation and the like.
The main website for the project (which is run by the investment company T. Rowe Price) is www.moneyconfidentkids.com
There's a student workbook that details such things as using the S.M.A.R.T. goal-setting system, which stands for:
S= Specific in nature
M= Measurable in terms of knowing when you're finished
A= Achievable in terms of being realistic
R= Relevant in terms of importance
T= Time-specific in terms of having a clear end date
And there's also a teaching guide so that us adults can help kids with their lessons. (Don't worry, there's no long division!)
So maybe share this with someone young who has plenty of time to make good decisions with their money and their savings so that they can increase their odds for a solid financial future.
Below are links to the student guide and the teaching guide.
And if you'd like to schedule a lunch meeting with me, yourself and a young person in your life who has some interest in learning more about these kinds of topics, please don't hesitate to reach out.
Take care,
Brett
